Dear Members, We here at NRAS know how much you all appreciate your partners/spouses etc. Well why not nominate them for the NRAS Person of the Year 2010 award. All you need to do is either post on here, email me at sally@nras.org.uk or write in to me at the office address with your reason for nominating them. The closing date for entries is January 4th 2011. We will then decide upon a winner and we will include them in our members magazine to be printed in February next year. I look forward to receiving your nominations Sally NRAS Membership

Easy Peasy! My Husband Richard is simply WONDERFUL. He married me, us having met in our local hospital- he was my nurse! We adopted 2 children together and have had a birth child. He is such a patient and kind man, I know I drive him mad with my attempts at maintaining independence through bloody minded grit and he tempers me with love and good heart. Without his support I know I couldn't do what I do. Richard has loved me and supported me throughout the deteriation in severe RA from a working teacher through to a mostly wheelchair using Mum with Personal Assistants. We have been through so much together, some truly hellish times facing the hospital emergencies and longer inpatient stays, very difficult negotiation of reluctant medics and their systems plus trials at home with 2 adopted children who both have emotional needs relating to their poor early starts. He has never let the RA become larger in his sight than the woman he loves and I am sooooo lucky to say that woman is ME! This year, he presented to the conference of british society of rheumatologists about the realities of living with and caring for some one with RA and was able to present this as a disease that presents unique challenges to young families like ours including the mental health implications of secondary trauma. This was very well received as people who care about us RAers are often completely overlooked. Having said all the above, we have had many happy times and with the hard times and the awful times all I can say is we have faced them together and with mutual love and respect. how to be a velvet bulldoser

Don't really like to disagree with Jenni - and I love Richard to bits. Next year, I'll nominate my Steve who's also a pretty special kind of guy.

Jenni and Jean Having met both Richard and Steve I have to say that you girls have the most wonderful, understanding and caring partners on this earth. That's not to say others don't have such great support but having spent some time with them it is easy to see that they each love their other halves to bits and for them the RA is just a part of the total package. These two guys are a priceless commodity. Go for it Lyn x

Dear Members, I wanted to thank you all for your entries via the forum and email. They really were lovely stories to read, and it has been difficult to select the winner. However, the membership team here at NRAS have decided upon The NRAS Person Of The Year 2010, and are delighted to announce the winner is...... Alan Magson. Alan was nominated by his wife Julie, and her story really captured our hearts. Julie's nomination along with a photo of Alan with Julie and his award will be featured in the next NRAS magazine for you all to see. Please join me in congratulating Alan (and Julie). Best Wishes Sally NRAS

Oh! Thank you Doreen, Julia Jean and Lynn and NRAS! To say I was gobsmacked to learn about this is an understatement. I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to repay Alan in this way and it's given us both a much needed boost! However-I have to say that to choose just one person of the year must be almost impossible because ALL parents, spouses, carers etc. are all special and each one of you deserves an award. So can we share this with you all? To all carers and partners and spouses everywhere---thank you! YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Will you still meet us at The Grouse for lunch Julie, or will it have to be the Ritz now that you're famous?

Very well done Alan and Julie too for the successful nomination! I look forward very much to reading about you both in the NRAS mag and am sure your story is really inspirational and moving as I know Alan himself has considerable health problems. I try to make sure I tell my hubby every day how wonderful he is, after 41 years of marriage and 38 of them with my pesky old RA! Congratulations again and celebrate well together Take care and love Lizxx

Well of course I'm not sure if the Grouses doors will be wide enough for our heads! Thank you again for all your kind words peeps. Alan is over the moon-it was lovely to give him some good news for a change! YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.
